Radio Free Albemuth
SYNOPSIS
Philip K. Dick made himself one of the major characters in this story that weaves his life, conspiracy theories and trademark speculations about the nature of reality. The “author’s” best-friend, Nick Brady is a college dropout and record store clerk living in Berkeley, California in the mid- 1980’s.
In this alternate past reality, President Richard F. Fremont, an unscrupulous Nixon-like leader, pursues a shadowy terrorist organization known as Aramchek. The alleged dangers posed by Aramchek provide the justification for the government to clamp down on civil liberties.
One night, a ghostly figure appears beside Nick’s bed. Soon after, Nick starts to have visions that he believes are inspired by VALIS -- an acronym for Vast Active Living Intelligent System. But what is VALIS? A higher consciousness from an alternate reality, an alien life-form or perhaps, even God?
His wife, Rachel and best friend, science fiction writer, Phil suspect he’s going crazy, but the strange part is that Nick’s slacker life is suddenly shaping up.
Nick gets an executive job offer from Progressive Records and the couple moves to Los Angeles. At the record company, a mysterious woman named Sylvia Sadassa applies for a job.
Although it might cost them their freedom or even their lives, Nick joins forces with Sylvia and his friend Phil to expose a secret conspiracy and overthrow Fremont’s corrupt regime.
